More Assessment Tools for Consultants

Due to the positive response to last month’s focus on the Work of Leaders Profile and 20/20 Insight assessment tools and feedback from attendees, the next meeting will focus on two more instruments that can potentially expand the services and support you provide to clients: the FIRO-B and the Strength Deployment Inventory.

Patrick Chaffin will provide an introduction to the FIRO-B instrument. The letters in the acronym stand for Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior. Originally developed to predict how military personnel would work together in groups, this short instrument was developed after painstaking research by William Schutz in the late 1950’s. Since then, the concepts and instrument are used to examine work group compatibility, interpersonal dynamics, team development and most importantly, insight how the group can facilitate its own development and return greater effectiveness and member satisfaction. Within organizations, consultants can use the FIRO-B process to aid individuals and groups to build on existing performance and to explore higher levels of team achievement.

The Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI) will be overviewed by Ed Hampton. The SDI provides deep insight into the behavioral propensities regarding conflicts in relationships.   Mapping a person’s Motivational Value System (MVS), the SDI provides the ability to understand how Self or Other’s behaviors might change during the three stages of conflict theorized by the SDI’s creator, Dr. Elias Porter.  These insights give one the ability to self-manage arising feelings.  The SDI is, thus, a powerful EI/EQ development tool.  It is also a powerful team or organizational development tool - when results are presented in an aggregated team view.  An underlying premise of the SDI is that conflict is not to be suppressed.  Rather, it is to be expressed so its inherent power is productive for the organization.  Attendees who register and provide an email address by May 19 will be provided a free access code to experience this powerful insight tool.   Please send your email address to ceo@performanceperspectives.com.  Additionally, those results will be aggregated into a compiled view so attendees will experience this SDI application. The on-line control panel used to administer on-line participation will be demonstrated during the session. Ed will also cover how the SDI may be used in a wide range of interventions and applications.
